Based on our research, it's rather clear to us that the current home page is not very engaging or useful.

Right now we're looking into updating the current home page into something more useful to users.

  • The direction we're going for is a feed driven approach,
    • like either reddit or facebook, where everything is in 1 feed, and you just keep scrolling to see more.
  • We're thinking of including
    • mixture of new and popular posts
    • new galleries/showcases
    • Professional contents (articles)
    • Updates to posts you're following
    • Posts from people you're following
    • Posts from forums you're following
    • and potential more categories.
Questions
  • What do you guys like to see in this feed?
  • What factors should we consider to make this feed great quality, useful to users/visitors?

I definetly think that showing content from my favorite (or most visisted sections), my subscribed threads, or threads I've previously participated in etc would be helpful here. But it should be aware of whether there is any new/unread content. I don't want it to show a bunch of stuff I've already read.

Hey Liang,

This looks like an interesting idea. If we're talking about reddit or other feeds, I'd like to point out that most of the time, I usually only check out specific topics when I know notice that there are icons for things like attachments or links.
This is something I think many younger people go for when they scroll through a site. Like how many people have already checked it out, are there any images posts or videos (so some kind of icon indicating that there's such a thing) and upvotes/downvotes/likes.

And yes, I definitely don't want to see something I've already read unless there's new responses to them. :)

I love the infinite scroll concept in as many pages as possible. One feed for the home page could be suggested topics based on what that user is following or even based on recent viewing history if that doesn't come off as too Facebook creepy/invasive.

Yeah that's definitely where we're going, starting with simple recommendation based on user's following forum/user/posts, with a mixture of new and hot discussions.

Thanks for the feedback Lee! I think we think alike! We will highlight discussions with images when we start, and in the future might factor in more of what we can grab. (perhaps resources too)

:D Definitely happy that there's sneak previews on images on there too.
Would Off-Topic be taken off if a site has political/nsfw/racy content there?

Lee
1: Off topic forums nodes can be turned off to not show up in the feed. That can be customized for each site.
2: NSFW content will be blocked/not blocked depending on user's NSFW setting.

How are the images to the right determined?

Any random image from that thread? 1st image in thread only?

For posts it'll be first image only, as it'll be the most simple solution to start with, AND it seems to be the standard among the industry. Once we launch, we'll start collecting feedback and the data to see if there's a better way to determine that.

For showcase and gallery they will look very different, and we will most likely show multiple images. (still in discussion)

I would think (if it should become possible) that loading random images where there are multiples would keep it looking more fresh and possibly increase clicks vs. thinking "I already saw that one".

Could be a direction we look into yeah. Maybe after we launch when we start to explore how to improve on this one, we can do a AB testing on this and see if it yields better results.

This could be dependant on the kind of forum in my opinion. For sites like AVSforum, it would make sense to rotate images but how about letting the OP select the feature image?

:D This could work for ongoing ROTM or Something-of-the-Month Contest threads!

I dig the idea of Ride Of The Month or featured showcase on the homepage.

Yep, in future phases we'll explore additional new type of feeds that could possibility include anything we want. We'll definitely revisit this conversation in the future.

Once we have the base feed setup ('phase 1') then we can continue to iterate with new content-types, and even new ways of displaying content that might be more eye-catching or relevant to the user.

I'm not a fan of the NSFW tag, we tried it at P4x4 many years ago and it was as though we were giving permission to some to post inappropriate pics/topics, we had a clamp down, a couple took exception and pushed it, 2 were given life bans after repeats and warnings and the forum didn't suffer in anyway, they simply were not missed, we do let them get away with the odd abbreviated swearing but 99% know when to stop as in one of the rules I posted years ago was 'if you won't say it to your mother or daughter, think twice about saying it here'. I have always tried very hard to make the forum family friendly as I explained to one guy, I don't want my granddaughter to walk in behind me and see inappropriate pics over my shoulder, if people want porn type content then go to a porn site and leave us alone. This aspect is taken very seriously.

Years ago I started a no BS sub section in general discussion where people could raise serious topics without fear of rubbish comments belittling the subject matter, one of those threads is about men's health issues which started when a member was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, he asked if I could document his journey anonymously if he fed me the details, which I did, along the way others posted issues and indeed I'm posting one myself currently. Seeing as I had lost my rites to move things around I asked if the no BS section could be moved into Off Topic, for this reason I think Off Topic should be represented in the Home Page feed. As mentioned above we take certain aspects of forum usage very seriously.

I agree that for returning members, a landing page that reflects new topics since their prior visit works nicely. However, a more comprehensive landing page for new members or new visitors would seem to make more sense. Specifically, on our forum
  • Front or landing page ( https://www.stingrayforums.com) is dysfunctional for our members
    • It is ‘technically’ or algorithmically determined rather than logically set up: for example, The Top Forums is simply driven by total historical views/posts.
    • Top photos have not been adopted by members at all, and as a result basically only shows the images ‘admin’ set up over a month ago
    • Trending Discussions does not reflect what is currently trending or new- today it includes as trending discussion a topic last responded to on July 2015, one from June 2018, one from 7 months ago, and only two that are newer than two weeks.
  • To find the full listing of topics (Discussions) a member needs to first land on the front page, then click on ‘All Trending Discussions’ or the icon next to their image icon
  • Our forum sponsors are nowhere to be found on the landing page
  • Major Stingray News is not on the landing page
  • Members have missed seeing the tiny notification ‘dot’ on their account icon indicating they have a ‘conversation’ pending. Many continue to not understand the more complex ‘conversation’ process as compared to the prior PM process
Based on what we have been hearing from members in unsolicited private communications, we recommend completely abandoning the algorithmically determined and truncated front page for the straighter forward “All Trending Discussions” page as the primary landing page. Further, members should automatically receive notification via email that they have a ‘conversation’ pending.
